BARRIE - Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin, who's in the final trimester of her pregnancy, is apologizing after crashing her vehicle into a south-end child-care centre last Friday.
Khanjin issued a statement via social media on Wednesday evening in which she called the July 19 incident — where her SUV crashed into a front window of Guiding Stars Child Care Centre at 225 Mapleview Dr. E. — “very unfortunate.”
Khanjin, 36, said she was “deeply sorry” to all who were impacted by the collision.
No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, but one of the building's large front windows was smashed.
In the online statement, Khanjin, who's in her second term as MPP and also serves as province's minister of the environment, conservation and parks, said the crash was the result of a "medical emergency."
“Last week, while 31 weeks pregnant, I suffered a medical emergency while driving and I was involved in a low-speed, single-car accident that regrettably caused property damage at a local business while attempting to park at my office,” she wrote in the statement.
Khanjin’s constituency office is located in the same plaza complex as the child-care centre.
Khanjin said that, following the incident, she has continued to receive medical support from her doctors and will refrain from driving “for the foreseeable future.”
She also noted she remained at the scene following the crash, where she not only received treatment from first responders, but also “co-operated fully with authorities.”
“The incident was very unfortunate and I am deeply sorry to those that were impacted," Khanjin said in her statement. "I am thankful that nobody was hurt and will assist in whatever way I can to support the business as it repairs its damaged property."
BarrieToday reached out to Guiding Stars Child Care Centre for comment, but a supervisor said she was “advised to not comment anymore” on the incident.
The child-care centre's owner did not respond to a request for comment from BarrieToday prior to publication.
No additional information was available and no charges have been laid as a result of the investigation as it occurred on private property, said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon.
