Hamilton Public Library has a week full of March Break programs, activities and special events for all ages and interests March 9 to 17.

Fun and games include escape rooms where kids can test their problem-solving skills under pressure, karaoke and video game tournaments. Animal and nature lovers can learn about Ontario’s Strange and Unusual Animals with Dan the Nature Man, satisfy their sweet tooth at Mmmaple Syrup and learn how creatures use self- defence in Nature’s Ninjas.

Kids passionate about science and space can explore the universe inside the McMaster2024-03-5-hpl-march-break-feature-sup Portable Planetarium, blow gigantic bubbles at the Bubbleology Show or make a fossil footprint in Let’s Talk Science’s Dynamic Dinos.

March Break fun also includes movies and live performances. See and hear Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra’s musical storytelling of The Hockey Sweater, a magic show with Owen Anderson and popular family movies. Young artists can flex their artistic talents in arts and crafts activities that feature traditional art
supplies and cutting-edge technology or make cool creations and learn about Hamilton’s upcoming solar eclipse at a STEAM Learning Lab.

HPL also offers programs for young folks. Children up to age 4 can sing and dance with Livi and Friends, enjoy a puppet show and storytime, and take their stuffies to a Teddy Bear sleepover.

March 16, Author Louisa Onomé gives a live reading and discusses their new book Pride and Joy with the author of The Bones of Ruin and the Effigies series, Sarah Raughley.

Tax season is upon us. HPL offers free tax filing services to eligible individuals and families with modest incomes. Trained volunteers from the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program and Social Planning and Research Council are at HPL branches throughout March and April to help you meet the April 30 deadline.

Solar eclipse safety

On Monday, April 8, Hamilton will experience its first total solar eclipse since 1925. The next will occur in 2144. To view this once-in-a-lifetime experience safely, HPL members can pick up a free pair of certified solar eclipse viewing glasses provided by McMaster University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. Glasses are available at all 23 HPL branches and/or during Bookmobile visits. An HPL library card must be presented to receive your glasses, and quantities are limited to one pair per member (while quantities last).
