FlamboroughToday received the following letter about Councillor Alex Wilson's column, 'Rural road safety a top concern in Flamborough'
I have met with Alex and emailed his office on many occasions on the issue of Flamborough roads. Nothing happens.
I live in Westover and travel on area roads daily. Speed limits have been reduced from a normal 80 km/h to 70 or 60 on most roads. On stretches of sparsely populated road this does not change the speed motorists travel at. The average speed is still between 80 and 90. When someone drives at the limit others will pass creating more of a safety situation.
Intersections are the biggest problem. Four-way stops in the past seem to be installed at intersections after a fatality has occurred. All the four way stops on Brock Road were installed shortly after a fatal accident. A fatal accident occurred at Westover Road and Concession 5, no four-way stop was installed. This intersection, along with a few others, need to be addressed.
Road maintenance is pitiful. Safari Road, a main truck route, will be closed for years while $500,000 is spent on an environmental study. Trucks now use Concessions 6 and 8, causing these to deteriorate.
The City is also spending $400,000 on an environmental study for traffic circle at Highway 52 and Powerline Road, with construction costs likely four times that. This money needs to be spent on fixing what we have.
