The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is set to reopen next week, after extensive construction that has been ongoing since the end of 2022.
The bridge received a new deck and a wider sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as repairs to the approach spans that connect the lift bridge to the existing road structure. The project cost more than $32 million, and created lane closures since construction began.
According to Public Services and Procurement Canada, the project is expected to have increased the lifespan of the deck and sidewalk of the bridge by around 50 years, while the approaches have gained an extra 30 years. The current lift bridge has been operating since 1962.
The bridge will be fully opened to pedestrians, cyclists and two-way traffic on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m.
