The city announced municipal funding for 11 affordable housing projects, mainly in the downtown core, on Friday.

“The fact is, much more desperately needed affordable and supportive housing is required,” said Mayor Andrea Horwath in a press release.

Horwath added that support from the federal and provincial government is still needed to meet the social housing needs in Hamilton.

Around $8.2-million in municipal housing funds are earmarked for the 11 projects, which will create around 440 affordable units and 435 supported units.

While the majority of the housing projects are based in the city’s downtown core, at a community council meeting on Thursday, Ward 15 Coun. Ted McMeekin said he has been brainstorming on an affordable housing project for veterans.

“In 2016 when they did a study of the homelessness numbers, the single highest demographic was veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder,” McMeekin said.

He said he has plans to speak with Horwath about adopting the Homes for Heroes program, which is backed by HGTV stars The Property Brothers, and support affordable housing projects for local veterans.

The idea is still in its early stages, but McMeekin said it is a project he has discussed with Bob Thomas at the Waterdown Legion.
