Coroner's inquest to examine 6 deaths at Barton Street jail

Dr. Karen Schiff, Regional Supervising Coroner, West Region, Hamilton Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the combined inquest into the deaths of Jason Archer, Paul Debien, Nathaniel Golden, Igor Petrovic, Christopher Sharp, and Robert Soberal.

Mr. Archer, 30, died on Aug. 21, 2017; Mr. Debien, 34, died on March 21, 2019; Mr. Golden, 28, died on Jan. 5, 2019; Mr. Petrovic, 29, died on Nov. 28, 2017; Mr. Sharp, 53, died on Sept. 7, 2018; and Mr. Soberal, 46, died on May 17, 2021. All deaths occurred while the person was in custody at, or after they were transferred to hospital from the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre. Inquests into their deaths are mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last 15 days and hear from approximately 15 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024. Dr. John Carlisle will be the presiding officer. Kristin Smith and Julian Roy will be the inquest counsel.
