FLAMBOROUGH CONNECTS: Did you know...we made our media debut 45 years ago

A lot has changed over the years, but residents remain at the heart of local programming

Did you know that the very first Information Flamborough column “Did You Know?” was published 45 years ago this week?

Information Flamborough opened in 1977 as a volunteer-driven information and referral service. With time it changed to Flamborough Information and Community
Services, became a registered charity, and today we are known as Flamborough Connects!

Today, Flamborough Connects provides Education Sessions for Seniors, our Income Tax Program, the Flamborough Drives program, the Holiday Gift Program, a Community Events Calendar, Wheel of Fitness gentle fitness classes for older adults and more, all for free or low-cost.

And we still provide Information and Referral, a service that is very helpful for Flamborough seniors who do not have access to the internet.

Back on June 6, 1979, in that very first “Did You Know?” column, we answered questions about African Lion Safari, Meals on Wheels, services from the Ontario government and summer programs for children.

In May 2024 we:

  • Answered questions about disposing of expired COVID tests and donating used canes
  • Helped a social worker match their client to programs that are the right fit
  • Finished filing income tax returns for almost 300 residents
  • Posted almost 150 events on our Community Events Calendar
  • Registered clients for Wheel of Fitness classes which run six times per week around Flamborough and virtually
  • Registered over 30 people for the June Education Session on Food and Mood
  • Raised over $1,000 in our Friday Fundraising BBQs, which helps to fund our free and low-cost programs

A lot has changed in 45 years but Flamborough residents are still at the heart of everything we do!

Join us for lunch

Did you know June is Seniors Month? Help us celebrate by attending the Flamborough Connects Friday Fundraising BBQs at Turkstra Lumber Waterdown (61 Hamilton St. N.). These weekly BBQs raise money to help us provide programs for Flamborough residents and seniors.

Every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Flamborough Connects volunteers serve up a hot dog, hamburger or veggie burger and a drink for only $5. If you make an additional donation, you will also get your choice of a bag of chips or a cookie. You can’t beat that price for a great lunch and all proceeds help keep our programs free and low-cost.

Did you know...Turkstra Lumber Waterdown supports Flamborough Connects with the Friday Fundraising BBQs; we couldn’t do it without them and we appreciate everything they do for Flamborough Connects and the Flamborough community.

Did you know... there are still lots of volunteer opportunities at the Oh Canada Ribfest run by Waterdown Rotary and Flamborough Rotary AM? Visit ohcanadaribfest.ca and click on Volunteer Now!  And check out other opportunities on our Flamborough Volunteers page.

Did you know Flamborough Connects is presenting a free “Food and Mood” Education Session on Wednesday, June 12 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Grace Anglican Church, 157 Mill Street North in Waterdown?
