Liquidation sales start tomorrow at The Bay, but that did not stop shoppers from crowding into the location at Mapleview Centre on Monday morning.
The parking lot was full at 11 a.m. today, (Monday, March 24) though many shoppers were seen and heard putting items back on the shelf as employees explained the liquidation sale had not yet started.
The Hudson’s Bay Company – Canada’s oldest company being founded in 1670 – filed for creditor protection earlier this month, after struggling with finances for years. The company is currently owned by NRDC Equity Partners, which also owns the U.S. department store Lord & Taylor.
The Mapleview Centre location was kept open following the Burlington Centre Bay’s closure on February 9, with company divisional vice president of communications Tiffany Bourre saying the proximity of the two stores to one another was a factor in the closure.
All but six Hudson's Bay stores are participating in liquidation sales: three in Toronto and three in Montreal.
