The pristine walls at Hamilton Technology Centre (HTC) are bursting with a new crop of colourful art pieces, with the opening of the latest Art at Seven Innovation exhibition.
The third instalment of the program presented by HTC and Artefact Social kicked off on Feb. 8 and runs until June 5 at the 7 Innovation Drive building. The March 7 opening featured food, wine, live music and a chance to meet some of the artists. Members of the public can view the artwork during HTC operating hours (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
HTC President Rob McCann pointed out that as a resident of the building, Artefact Social was a good fit for the initiative. "They produce art-type events for businesses," he explained.
The Art at Seven Innovation initiative came about after the pandemic, in the hope of "engaging people in the world around them again and to support local artists," said Roshni Motiwalla, HTC's director of operations. The first exhibition was in May 2022, followed by a second exhibition last November. Each show features over 60 art pieces by about 45 to 48 artists.
Artist Anita Thomas, who coordinates the Art at Seven Innovation exhibitions, says a panel of six to seven people jury the submissions. "We try to have a range of different types of art," she said.
While there isn't a specific theme for each exhibition, the focus is on locally produced work. "It depends on what's submitted, but the show starts to pull together," she said of the process.
Plans are in the works for a fourth exhibition later this year, and the call for submissions will open in May.
