The clouds cleared just in time for onlookers at Memorial Park in Waterdown to see the solar eclipse.
Viewers screamed in awe and delight as the eclipse shrouded the park in darkness, taking off their safety glasses to view the corona of light for just a minute before the sun peeked back out.
There were about a hundred people gathered at the park to watch the moon pass over the sun.
Some families came from as far away as Minto to see the eclipse.
Star Statulevicius drove to Memorial Park from Toronto with her family to watch the eclipse.
She said she chose Waterdown because she has some friends in the area, but was also looking for a spot in the path of totality that wouldn’t be super busy.
“This spot was on the most northern fringe [of the path of totality]. It was a sweet spot,” she said.
Statulevicius, along with many others in the park, was happy the sky cleared just in time to see the eclipse in its entirety.
Larissa Ding of Philadelphia was in the area visiting friends, and made her way to the park for the celestial show.
Waterdown residents Maureen and Michael Bookbinder live close to the park and said they just walked across the street to join all the people viewing the eclipse.
“It’s such a privilege to witness this,” Maureen said. “It doesn’t happen for another how many years?”
The next eclipse moving through Hamilton region will be in 2144.
