Hamilton police continue investigating a suspicious fire at 3906 Governors Rd. in Lynden.

Const. Trevor McKenna with Hamilton Police said a passerby called in the fire at 4:42 a.m. on Wednesday.

When Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) crews arrived, said a spokesperson for the department, the house was "well involved" in the fire. Crews searched for occupants in the home and determined the house was empty.

HFD estimates around $800,000 of damage was done to the home. Firefighters were unable to find the source of the fire because of the "significant damage." No injuries were reported from first responders who fought the blaze.

The fire is considered suspicious because of the early hour and fact that no one was home, McKenna said.

According to a social media post by police, Governors Road was closed for several hours yesterday between Lynden Road and Field Road due to the fire.

"We still have to do a proper investigation to determine the cause, but that is where it stands at the moment," McKenna wrote in an email.

HFD says the fire has been reported to the Ontario Fire Marshal.
