Altercation at fatal Port Dover crash scene leads to attempted murder charge

Police look for witnesses to five-vehicle collision that killed a 33-year-old Sudbury resident

A motorist is facing an attempted murder charge related to an altercation that took place in Port Dover following a five-vehicle collision Saturday that killed a Sudbury motorcyclist.

Police say that the Norfolk detachment of the OPP responded to a five-vehicle collision on Highway 6 South near Blueline Road at around 4:55 p.m. Sept. 14.

Investigators determined that three motorcycles, a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a pick-up truck were involved in the collision. A passenger on one of the motorcycles, a 33-year-old from Sudbury, was pronounced dead at the scene (OPP does not release the gender of people they interact with). The operator of the same motorcycle was transported to a trauma centre with serious injuries.

The operator of a second motorcycle was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Four other vehicle occupants were not injured.

Police say that after the collision, an altercation took place that resulted in one person being transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police didn’t elaborate on the nature of the altercation.

As a result of the investigation, one person was taken into custody and charged with the following:

  • Dangerous operation
  • Dangerous operation causing bodily harm
  • Dangerous operation causing death
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Attempt to commit murder

Police say the accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Sept. 17. 

The OPP press release did not provide any information about the accused, including age or place of residence, or what relationship the accused has to the earlier collision. 

Port Dover was expected to attract 100,000 motorcycle enthusiasts over the weekend, for the Friday the 13th rally.

The police press release indicated a publication ban has been issued, and no additional information will be released.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision or captured dash cam footage or area residents who may have security footage is urged to contact the Norfolk County OPP.
