Hamilton Police Service invites members of the community to an upcoming public meeting on the implementation of body-worn cameras. The meeting will take place at Hamilton Police Service Central Station on Feb, 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A virtual option will also be available at https://tinyurl.com/CIS202520.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to learn more about the implementation of body-worn cameras and ask questions.
The Hamilton Police Service will begin rolling out body-worn cameras in March following approval by the Hamilton Police Service Board at its June 27, 2024 meeting.
The adoption of this technology aligns with the service’s strategic plan to leverage technology and innovation to enhance public safety, transparency, and accountability.
Since 2015, the Hamilton Police Service has provided the board with reports on body-worn cameras and closely monitored their effectiveness across the country. Currently, 17 police services in Ontario have implemented the technology, with another 18 considering adoption. Courts encourage the use of body-worn cameras as they provide an impartial record of interactions between police and the public and can capture crucial evidence.
During discussions in April 2024, board members raised concerns about the cost of implementing the program. In response, the Hamilton Police Service revised its initial plan, reducing the budget from $15.5 million to under $9.6 million over five years. Additionally, the number of cameras has been reduced from 650 to 500 to ensure a fiscally responsible approach while maintaining the program's effectiveness.
Hamilton Police Service encourages community members to attend the meeting in person or online to learn more about the implementation of the technology.
