On Nov. 20 at approximately 4:40 p.m. a male pulled a knife on two individuals at Jackson Square.
The male suspect, who had previously been trespassed from Jackson Square, had been located by security causing a scene within the premises. After some discussion, the male was eventually escorted off of the property by security.
Once outside, the male produced an edged weapon and took a combative stance towards security.
Officers from the Hamilton Police Service - Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team (MCRRT) arrived on scene and safely brought the event to an end. The male was taken into police custody and charged with the following:
- Assault with a weapon x2
The weapon was seized, and no injuries were reported in this event.
For reference, MCRRT consists of mental health clinicians and uniform police officers who respond to emergent calls for service involving persons in acute crisis. The goal of MCRRT is to reduce the time patrol officers spend dealing with complex cases and to bring mental health expertise directly to the scene.
In 2023, MCRRT responded to 5,514 calls for service.
