Hamilton Police are seeking the community's assistance in identifying suspects involved in a break and enter related to a Facebook Marketplace transaction that occurred late last night.

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, shortly before midnight, Hamilton Police were called to a residence in the area of Lavender Drive and Larkspur Crescent in Ancaster. The incident occurred after a seller listed a MacBook Pro for sale on Facebook Marketplace and communicated with a potential buyer via cell phone.

The buyer requested to meet outside the residence to inspect the MacBook. Upon opening the door, the seller was confronted by a male suspect who suddenly emerged from the bushes and attempted to force entry into the home. The seller quickly shut the door and secured the back door, where they believe they saw a second suspect.

Suspect Descriptions:

  • Suspect One: Black male (medium/dark complexion), slim build, 5'8-5'10, wearing a dark grey hoodie with light-coloured strings, dark grey track pants, white shoes with black trim, and a white medical mask.
  • Suspect Two: Dressed entirely in black clothing.

Additionally, a white vehicle was seen speeding through the area around the time of the incident. Investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have information regarding the vehicle or its occupants.

Residents and drivers in the area are encouraged to check any available surveillance footage for any details that could assist the investigation between the hours of 11:20 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

Hamilton Police are also reminding the community of the Buy and Sell Exchange Zone located at the Mountain Station for safely conducting online transactions. Other safety tips include:

  • Conduct transactions during daylight hours.
  • Meet in a busy public location.
  • Bring a friend or family member with you.
  • Keep records of communication between yourself and the buyer/seller.

The Buy and Sell Exchange Zone is available 24/7, is well-lit, and requires no appointment. However, Hamilton Police do not actively monitor or mediate the use of this space.

Anyone with information that could assist with this investigation is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Ben Licop at 905-546-3851.
