Two teens charged in Hamilton Mountain vehicle break-ins

Police say the pair was using an electronic key scanning device and believe more suspects may be involved

Hamilton Police have disrupted a group of youths engaged in auto thefts on the Hamilton mountain.

On Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025 shortly before 3 a.m, Hamilton Police responded to a report of youths breaking into vehicles in a parking lot near Mohawk Road west and Rice Avenue.

Officers operating a plain door vehicle swiftly arrived and observed two male youths in dark clothing near a damaged vehicle. A foot chase ensued and additional resources such as K9 and patrol officers assisted in arresting one of the suspects.

A second suspect was arrested a short time later while they were attempting to flee in a local taxi cab.

During the investigation, Police discovered an electronic automobile key scanning device that the pair had utilized during the incident.  

Suspect 1 (17 years old) was charged with the following:

  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Theft over $5,000
  • Possession of a device for purpose of committing theft
  • Mischief under $5,000

Suspect 2 (16 years old) was charged with the following:

  • Theft over $5,000
  • Possession of a device for purpose of committing theft
  • Mischief under $5,000

Police believe there were more youths involved in this incident.
