The Waterdown Village BIA has a unique placemaking initiative event happening all summer long…and all you have to do to participate is sit down and put your feet up!

Chairing is Caring is a special community art project.

Amanda Groves, Chair of the Waterdown Village BIA, explained, “Chairing is Caring features a gallery of colourful Muskoka Chairs, hand-painted by local artists, on display at host businesses throughout the BIA.”

But where do you, the community, come in?

“Each chair is painted in support of a local charity,” said Groves. “We invite members of the public to wander the streets, enjoy and try out each chair. If they find one (or more) they love, they can bid to own them through QR codes located on chairs. The auction is open all summer long and proceeds will go to support local charities. Each chair is aligned with a designated charity that will benefit. It really is a win for everyone!” she concluded.

There are 18 chairs in total, which means 18 local artists participated, 18 local businesses are hosting a chair, and 18 local charities will benefit. “We are so grateful to everyone who contributed,” said Groves. “We really couldn’t have done this project without this amazing level of support from the community.”

There is also a special, bonus chair which will be won by one lucky person. “Flamborough-raised Indigenous artist, Kevin Allan Hess, has painted the Smokey Hollow chair, which is stunning!” exclaimed Groves. “Anyone who makes a non-perishable food or cash donation to the Flamborough Food Bank at the Waterdown Farmers’ Market on Saturdays, or at the BIA office during business hours, will receive a ballot for their chance to win this gorgeous chair. It’s an extra way for everyone to have a chance to own a unique piece of original art.”

The Chairing is Caring auction is live now, and will run until September 15, when the highest bidders will be chosen. The locations of the chairs are available by downloading the brochure here or picking it up at the market or the BIA office.

Groves said, “We are very excited about this wonderful placemaking initiative supporting local businesses, artists, and charities. We hope the community will eagerly participate and make this a huge success for everyone. Come out and see these beautiful, unique and artistic chairs, all summer long!”
