The Waterdown Museum of Hope is more than a collection of artifacts—it serves as a living link between the past and present, maintained and presented by students from Waterdown District High School.
Student-run since 2012, the museum has grown from a small display in a single high school classroom to a thriving institution that eventually occupied three classrooms, housing over 1,000 artifacts. Each year, it welcomes more than 1,000 visitors from Waterdown and Burlington, establishing itself as a vital part of the community.
A milestone achievement came last year with the opening of a permanent home at the Waterdown Legion, thanks to a collaborative partnership and generous community sponsorship.
This secure and modern facility ensures the museum's growing collection is preserved for future generations. Despite this professional setting, student involvement remains central to the museum's operations. Each semester, Gr. 11 history students take on the important role of curating exhibits based on their own family or community histories.
The fall semester is particularly special, as student-curated exhibits focus on themes of remembrance in the lead-up to Remembrance Day. These unique displays reflect personal stories of families, veterans, and the local community, offering visitors a poignant and reflective experience.
In addition to curating the exhibits, students act as docents, guiding visitors through the museum and providing insights into the history they have researched and shared.
