Today is Giving Tuesday!
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. The idea caught on and has grown around the world, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
GivingTuesday was founded in 2013 in Canada by CanadaHelps.org, GIV3 and several other founding partners. GivingTuesday now has active movements in more than 80 countries, collaborating year-round to inspire generosity around the world, with a common mission to build a world where generosity is part of everyday life.(courtesy givingtuesday.org)Following the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday offers us the perfect opportunity to give back to charities, nonprofits, and organizations that serve our communities.
Here in Flamborough, we’re fortunate to have so many dedicated groups that help make our community stronger. Local organizations like the Flamborough Food Bank and Food with Grace Waterdown Food Bank provide nourishment, while faith groups offer spiritual support. Healthy Youth Network and Youth Unlimited create programs for our youth, and groups such as Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, sports organizations, and after-school programs offer opportunities for children to grow and thrive. Animal Adoptions of Flamborough cares for pets, while Eagles Nest cares for mental health, and the Flamborough Santa Claus Parade brings joy to all. Service clubs throughout the area contribute to a variety of projects that benefit not just our community, but beyond, and countless individuals volunteer with many other organizations in Flamborough.
Community network of services, support
At Flamborough Connects, we are proud to be part of this network of community-focused organizations. Through our Seniors Services, Community Services, and Volunteer Services, we provide programs and services to support Flamborough residents. Our free and low-cost programs take place across Flamborough, offering resources such as our Flamborough Community Guide, Community Events Calendar, and Volunteer Guide, all available on our website. We also provide
gentle fitness classes for seniors, income tax preparation assistance, educational sessions for seniors, Flamborough Drives, and more. None of this would be possible without the help of our incredible community.
On this Giving Tuesday, Flamborough Connects would like to take a moment to recognize the many volunteers and donors who make our work possible. Our volunteer fitness leaders offer six fitness classes each week across Flamborough. Our volunteer tax preparers complete hundreds of tax returns. Our volunteer drivers help seniors with errands and grocery shopping, while our Food Bank Delivery drivers delivery to residents on four routes around Flamborough. Our Snow Angel volunteers assist seniors by shovelling their walkways in winter, and many more volunteers support our fundraising efforts, like our Friday Fundraising BBQs and the Flamborough Volunteer Appreciation Celebration.
Holiday Gift Program
And, of course, we are deeply grateful to our Holiday Gift Donors, who have generously contributed to fulfilling the Wish Lists of Flamborough Seniors. This year, we’ll be delivering more than 175 gifts — an increase of nearly 25 per cent from last year!
If you’re still interested in donating to a senior this holiday season, we are in need of stocking stuffers to include with our Holiday Gifts. Donations can be dropped off at the Flamborough Connects office at 163 Dundas Street East in the Waterdown Library building.
If you’re able, please consider celebrating Giving Tuesday by donating to your favourite Flamborough charity. Donations to Flamborough Connects can be made securely online at flamboroughconnects.ca/donate, via e-transfer to [email protected], or in person at our office at 163 Dundas Street East in the Waterdown Library building.
Happy Giving Tuesday!
