City eyes 6.9% property tax hike as 2025 budget process gets underway

The City of Hamilton is kicking off its 2025 Budget process this week with a staff presentation to the General Issues Committee on Wednesday (Nov. 6).

According to the staff report attached to the meeting agenda, the preliminary outlook for the 2025 Tax Supported Budget estimates a 6.9 per cent hike in residential property taxes and a 9.95 per cent combined increase for water and wastewater fees. 

There will be two opportunities for public delegations to present to the committee, on Nov. 18 and on Jan. 20. 

Citizens interested in appearing before the committee can do so in person, virtually or by video submission, and must submit a Request to Speak to a Committee of Council. The deadline to submit a request to appear at the Nov. 18 meeting is noon on Friday, Nov. 15; the deadline for video submissions is noon on Thursday, Nov. 14. 

Written submissions are also encouraged (submission of the form is not required), and will be accepted by e-mail ([email protected]) or faxed to 905-546-2095. They can also be mailed to: Angela McRae, Legislative Coordinator, Office of the City Clerk,  1st Floor, 71 Main St. W., Hamilton, Ontario L8P 4Y5.

Agendas for all meetings are posted on the city’s Council & Committee web page.

Final budget deliberations are slated for Feb. 7, with Feb. 12 targeted for the approval of next year’s budget.
