Farm Crawl visitors meet barnyard friends, learn about agriculture

Eight Flamborough farms opened their doors to the public for final tours of the season

It was a hot late summer Saturday for the season's final Farm Crawl.

FlamboroughToday visited two of eight farms celebrating the harvest season with produce, tours, visits with barnyard animals and learning about agriculture.

At Between the Vines on Weirs Lane, owner Sara Rydell gave a tour of her family's young lavender farm and apple orchard.

Between the Vines was originally a lavender farm, with plants on the front lawn of the farm, and in the fields behind the farmhouse. Rydell said the lavender farm was bought five years ago and its plants were removed. Her family bought the farm a year ago - but there was no lavender.

"But we're putting it back in," Rydell said.

Rydell's mother held a bake sale during Farm Crawl, selling pumpkin-lavender cookies.

Rydell herself took visitors on a tour of the property, to meet her Highland cows Rosie and Maisie, her heritage chickens in their coop, and to see the big field of young lavender plants, grape vines and apple trees.

"We have a lot of different perma-culture ideas," she said, noting that having chickens, cows and different crops will grow their farm in a sustainable way over the next few years.

At Liberty Way Farm on Highway 5, FlamboroughToday spoke with Kristen Vandermarel, who was visiting with her daughters Eden and Sophie.

Vandermarel said she is a gardener, but brought her daughters to Farm Crawl to learn more about perma-culture.

"We grow herbs and food and meat birds in our own backyard," she said, adding that she was, "learning how they do things at a larger scale."

But for Sophie, the best part of the day, she said, was getting ice cream.
