A driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving Sunday morning after causing a collision, attempting to flee, and assaulting an officer who arrived at the scene to investigate.

On March 2, at 8:41 a.m., members from Burlington OPP responded to a collision on Highway 403 eastbound near Waterdown Rd in the City of Burlington. Reports were received that the driver who caused the collision was driving erratically prior to the collision and was not pulling over after the collision.

An officer from the Burlington detachment arrived on scene and observed vehicles pulled over on the right shoulder and occupants outside of the vehicles. The officer separated the occupants and was then assaulted by the suspect while placing them under arrest for impaired driving.

As a result of the investigation, Manjot Singh, age 25, from Brampton has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • operation while prohibited under the criminal code
  • assault a peace officer

The accused was already under a court ordered driving suspension for a previous impaired driving conviction.

The accused was released from custody and is set to appear on May 26 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Milton.

The OPP remains committed to taking alcohol/drug-impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education. The OPP relies on the public to report crime. Impaired driving is a serious crime that should be treated no differently. If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 9-1-1 to report it.
