Victim in Good Shepherd Centre stabbing dies; charge upgraded to second-degree murder

Accused was arrested at the scene; police are not seeking additional suspects

On Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7:10 p.m., police were dispatched to 135 Mary Street to the Good Shepherd for a stabbing that had just occurred. Upon arrival, the victim Venanzio (Vinny) Tirabassi, 47, was found with a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to the Hamilton General Hospital where he remained on life support. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Tirabassi died as a result of the injuries. The homicide unit of Hamilton Police Service has since taken over the investigation.

The accused, Fredeman Renderos, 53, was arrested on Jan. 2 at the scene. He was charged with aggravated assault, a charge that will be upgraded to second- degree murder. Police are not seeking any additional suspects and believe this was an isolated incident.

The scene was processed and released last week, however, officers will still be in the area over the next few days, speaking to residents and continuing the investigation.

Detectives are continuing to seek out and speak to witnesses. The victim and accused were housed in the same dorm, and there were no previously reported issues between them.
