The Dundas Tennis Club is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and members are organizing a two-day community event on June 7 and 8 to mark this special occasion.

As far back as the late 1800s, tennis was popular in Dundas, with the town's more affluent citizens meeting for games on large lawns and in back yards. (It couldn’t have been too strenuous if the long skirts shown in vintage photos are anything to go by!)

The Dundas Tennis Club was officially formed in 1924 and the following 100 years saw it thrive despite world events such as the Great Depression and Second World War.

There were many changes over the years. The courts moved from the “cove” in the park to its present location, which offers better air flow (and less chance of heat stroke!). The courts changed from clay to hard courts and the clubhouse that was built in 1950 for 200 members was rebuilt in 1978 for over 600 members. And it still stands today.

A common thread in the history of the club is a love of the sport, and a spirit of community. Dundas Tennis Club members raised the large sums needed through fundraising in many forms.

As the club reflects on its past, it can take inspiration from the efforts of past members, who worked hard to create a place where tennis can be enjoyed by all.

The DTC's Party of the Century takes place on June 7, with silent auction, live music and cash bar. It will be held at the St. Augustine Parish Hall (58 Sydenham St.), with proceeds going to charity.

On June 8, the community is invited to a Parade in the Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a fire truck, Zamboni, baton twirlers and other surprises. After the parade, guests can test your tennis skills on the courts, have a piece of cake, and purchase some great food from the Copetown Lions Food Truck. There will also be a bouncy castle and fun activities for the whole family.
