Soccer is kind of a big deal in Flamborough – so it makes sense to celebrate the end of the season in a big way.
The community is invited to the Flamborough Dundas Soccer Club (FDSC) Soccer Festival this Saturday, which typically attracts thousands of people.
“It’s the second biggest (local) event, I assume, other than Ribfest,” says Julia Fahey, who looks after marketing and communications for the club. “We had over 5,000 people last year and we are expecting more this year.”
The fun lasts all day, and includes plenty of soccer action as players take to the pitch for their championship finals. There will also be awards ceremonies, a live band, food booths and a free inflatable zone. The vendors’ area will feature a range of local businesses, services and community groups.
“We have a seriously eclectic mix of vendors,” notes Fahey, listing local restaurants, a hairdresser, a tie-dye booth and even a ping-pong group that is looking for members.
The FDSC is also hosting a silent auction which runs until Aug. 24. There are 100 items up for bids, all donated by local businesses. Offerings include meal and store gift cards, gift baskets, sports clothing, household items, and experience packages. Anyone can place a bid; the goal is to raise $2,500 for the club.
The club is hoping families will join them on Festival Day, to learn more about the club or just to have a fun day together.
“We have lots going on, so it's not just for hardcore soccer fans,” noted Fahey. “It's kind of a family day.”
The FDSC Soccer Festival takes place at Joe Sams Leisure Park Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about FDSC and upcoming registrations, visit the club website.
